Experimentelle Neurochirurgie II —
Forschungsgruppe PD Dr. Dr. med. Isabel Hostettler
Our research group studies haemorrhagic strokes, which occur when blood leaks from damaged vessels in the brain. We focus on aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage, a rare but often life-threatening condition caused by the rupture of a vascular aneurysm.
By analysing genetic and inflammatory factors alongside the influence of the microbiome, and applying advanced molecular technologies, we aim to uncover the mechanisms underlying aneurysm formation and rupture. Our goal is to develop new therapeutic approaches to improve treatment and prevent haemorrhagic strokes.

Effects of the microbiome on intracranial aneurysms
This project investigates the factors that contribute to the development, growth, and rupture of aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhages. It is known that chronic inflammation plays an important role in these processes. Furthermore, the microbiome can influence disease risk through local inflammatory processes.
Alongside analysing the microbiome in stool and saliva samples, we also aim to decipher the cellular mechanisms in intracranial aneurysms. This integrative approach aims to deepen our understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of the disease and contribute to the development of improved diagnostic and therapeutic options.
